Don't forget the bug repellant

On July 1st my husband and I decided to hike the Flesherton Management Forest trail at the end of Highland Drive in Flesherton.

It was a relatively hot and humid day. We knew there would be mosquitoes, but we weren't prepared for the onslaught that we would encounter on the trail. We had the lotion style, insect repellent with us, versus spray repellant. We applied it to our arms, legs, neck, etc all exposed skin. It wasn't enough. The mosquitoes were biting us through our clothes on our backs. Needless to say... we walked quickly.

On the trail, I was not expecting the terrain to vary as much as it did on the trail. We walked on well worn paths beside evergreen trees, in long grass and on gravel surfaces. We passed cedar rail fences, small streams, an area that seemed to be a former gravel pit, meadows and forest cover. This trail would be fantastic in the fall, with no bugs to fight off and autumn colours to add to the view.

This trail is about 2 km, perfect for an easy walk. The trails are marked with painted blazes on trees. Long grass in places maked it hard to know if you are on the trail or not. Luckily, others had gone before us and we could see where they had walked.

I am amazed at the work involved in building this power station over one hundred years ago.
